Memminger Elementary School
Charleston County School District – Charleston, South Carolina
This new 77,000 SF school in downtown Charleston replaced the original school built in the 1950’s on the same site. The new school was designed with two wings. One wing consists of classrooms and incorporates daylighting and passive solar strategies. The second wing houses a media center, multipurpose room, the cafeteria and administrative areas. The views from the school are spectacular, overlooking the original school yard with large oak trees and historic garden walls.
LEED initiatives in the design phase of this project included a water analysis to optimize water consumption versus the construction budget, an energy analysis to optimize energy consumption versus the construction budget and a lighting analysis to optimize the quality of lighting systems and energy consumption of the lighting system versus the construction budget.
